Tarun, this is an old post of mine from my blog chenthil.blogspot.com. The answers are already there. This is on the compound wall of the High Court, near the Judges entrance. I am not sure wheter any prisoners escaped :-)

During the First World War in 1914, the German cruiser Emden bombarded near the Esplanade lighthouse and caused damages to the walls. It remains as an ornamental Doric column in the High Court compound itself. A plaque can be seen in the eastern compound immortalise the event bearing the date 22 September 1914.

The Ship Emden bombarded Madras and the shell fell in two places one near the present Judges entrance at the Madras High Court, the other near Royapuram on the Burma Shell Oil tanks, incidentally next to these tanks were the Clive Battery. There is a stupa erected in the place were the bomb fell inside the Port, opposite to the Container terminal. Pl check this site. wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardment_of_Madras.

Do any one know that there was a Prison inside the Port, Dungeon where the prisoners meant to be sent to Andamans were lodged? I know the dungeon, but i need an authentic proof for the same.
